Transtympanic Steroid Infusion For Deafness

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) or sudden deafness, is a rapid loss of hearing. SSHL can happen to a person all at once or over a period of up to 3 days causing a hearing loss at three consecutive frequencies. It should be considered a medical emergency. The cause for this disorder is unclear, but research has indicated that viral infection, vascular compromise, and immunologic diseases could be key reasons for this hearing disorder. Transtympanic steroid application may be safe, inexpensive, easy to perform and efficacious in cases of SSHL not responsive to traditional therapy.
